Questions

Wow, someone read my email/FB posting!

Here are answers to the questions I've received so far:

  • How far back in memory do you want to go?
  • Would it be memories of only you, your family or whatever involves you?
Short Answer: Pretty much anything goes, as long as it is "G" rated.

Longer Answer: I'm the compiling editor; however, I don't want this to be about me - I want it to be about you so that I, my children, and grandchildren and extended family can get to know who you are, and maybe those in your family that are no longer with us that you remember.

  • How long does each memory have to be?
  • How many memories should I email?
Length of Memory: As short as a "one liner," such as "My mom had chickens when she was a little girl in Greece" or up to a max of 500 words. I'm thinking that most people will write one or two paragraphs per memory. But I'm flexible. Since this will primarily be a digital book, I am not so worried about the length.

Quantity of Memories: At least one, LOL. Maybe a maximum of about 15? I know some prolific writers who might take over the whole thing, so this gives everyone's memory a chance to stand out.

I Don't Know What To Write

Are you a writer? Have you written your autobiography? Most of us will answer no to those questions. So, here are some ideas to get you started.

Don't forget, here is the Memory Submission FAQ to submit your memory.

Genealogy.com has a biography helper on their site.

Family Traditions is one of the topics that they list:

What traditions did his family have? Select this Topic to preserve his family memories. Biography Assistant offers special questions at different points in his life to highlight how his family traditions changed over time.
If you follow the link on their site for Family Traditions, you will eventually get to a page with the list of questions below. Answering any one of those questions would make a great Memory for the book. You can answer them for yourself or for someone who has passed on... an example
"I remember my grandma always made mundu (the Korean version of wonton soup) for New Years. Me and my sister would sit around the table at my grandma's house with our many aunties and fold trays and trays of mundu."
If I had the time, maybe I would get more descriptive of the house, or list the names of the people, or include a recipe for mundu. But since this is a public blog, I won't go into more detail here; however, in your memory, please put as much detail as you can think of. Don't worry about grammar or spelling - I am most interested in getting a feel or flavor of the memory. More is better.

From the Genealogy.com website:

  • What traditions did he and his family have? Did they eat special foods on special days? Did they make a point of spending time together on certain days?

  • Were there family customs that he disliked? If yes, what were they and did he have to go along with them anyway?

  • As a child, was there a special holiday on which he and his family carried out family traditions? Religious or state holidays, for example? What did he do on these days?

  • How were birthdays or anniversaries special in his family? What did they do differently from what other families do?

  • Describe his everyday family routines. Did they always eat together at the table? Did they play games or spend time together in the evenings? Did these later become customs in his own family?

  • Did he and his family get together regularly to take family portraits? Did he like to do this or did he dread it?

  • Did he have family reunions when he was a child? How often? What did he do at them? Were these times to revive family customs? Whom did he look forward to seeing?

  • Of the customs that he shared with his family while growing up, which ones did he introduce to his own family?

  • Many years later, what family tradition from this time was most memorable to him and why? Did it bring back memories of loved ones or the way life was in "yesteryear"?

Getting to Know You

I am thinking of having an introduction section at the beginning of the book. So, for starters, perhaps you might want to introduce yourself. (How to submit a memory). Please comment on what you think about this idea.
  • Written Memories
    • Written by yourself for yourself
    • Written by yourself for someone else (especially for those too young to write their own, or who is no longer living)
    • An example: Hi, my name is -- --, and I was born in California. My best friend is my husband, -- --, and my favorite food is chocolate. I have three children, all of whom became taller than me before jr. high school.
    • about 1 paragraph
  • Photographic Memories
    • Include pictures of the following for either or all of the following: yourself, you children, you siblings, or your parents. (I may sprinkle these around the book)
    • Remember, even a poor photo of someone no longer with us is better than no photo at all!
    • Baby pictures
    • School pictures
    • Wedding pictures
    • Family pictures

Welcome

Greetings ~

I am putting together a collection of Family Memories to give to my Family.* Many of us are separated by distance and/or time, and I hope that this book will become a virtual Family Reunion of sorts. The blog, itself, however, is for information about the electronic book, and will not contain any actual stories. What it will include are things like

  • How to submit your memories
  • Status/Progress of the project
  • Ideas to get you started on what to write
I am creating this blog so that 1)Family Members have a place to look up information about the project and so that 2)total strangers who might want to do this for their own family might have an example to gather ideas from. I will also include ideas for topics to write about.

Looking forward to sharing your memories.

Love, Karla

PS This post will be archived as the "About This Project" page.

* Family, being the people who fill my life with love and joy, regardless of wether they are related to me by blood or not.
